Auctiva Blings Bras for Charity

Breast cancer is a scary thing for the women who suffer from it and their families. My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer about six years ago, and I have to say, I’ve never been more afraid in my life.

She had to deal with breast cancer twice: A tumor formed in her right breast, she had it removed, underwent chemo and radiation, only to have the cancer come back a few months later. That time around she didn’t take any more chances and had her entire breast removed.

Because of my mom, my sisters and the other women in my life, I now pay close attention to events that benefit breast cancer awareness and research. I know it’s something many women will have to face on in their lifetimes. According to Bling My Bra, one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, and one in 35 will die of it.

So I was excited when we learned about the Bling My Bra charity auctions last year. These auctions take place on eBay during the month of October to raise money for the Susan G. Komen organization, a group devoted to cancer research.

Last year, Auctiva participated by decorating and sending in one one-of-a-kind bra. This year, we donated two creations to be auctioned off. One is a “spooktacular” Halloween-themed bra called “A Treat for the Tatas.” The other is a funky fuchsia number called “Flashing Feathers and Fringe.” It’s a throwback to the ’80s, according to one of its creators, Social Media Coordinator Steve Swim.

The bras were fun to make—we certainly had a lot of fun coming up with names for them—but we’re most excited about the possibilities they bring: more resources to find a cure for breast cancer.

As you’re shopping on eBay next month, be sure to check out the Bling My Bra charity auctions. Last year, these auctions raised more than $6,000. This year, organizers would like to raise $10,000. We think they can do it; they just need some support, so keep an eye out for these auctions and help spread the word.
