Six Auctiva employees recently headed to San Jose to attend the iPad Dev Camp and compete in the event’s Hackathon Competition with a new seller app called Seller Dashboard.
The app would allow online merchants to manage their orders right from their iPads. Merchants could view order details at a glance, begin the shipping process, enter tracking numbers, and view payment and buyer information through a simple drag-and-drop interface.
“If you’re on the go, this app would definitely be helpful,” says Auctiva Vice President Kevin Kinell, who had the chance to step back into the role of developer for this competition. “With it, you could go out to you your warehouse and manage your orders from there if you wanted to.”
To use Seller Dashboard, sellers would simply launch the app on their iPads, find the desired order and “click” on it with the touch display to bring up the order’s details. To begin the shipping process, they would drag the desired item to the “Items to Ship” box at the bottom of the screen. Clicking the “Process” button would load a new screen where the package’s contents and buyer’s shipping and payment information would display. To continue with shipping, sellers would then select the shipping carrier and enter tracking numbers, if applicable.
The team also envisioned adding message notifications so merchants would know instantly when they had new orders or had received payments, but they ran out of time during the competition. Just enough of the basic concept was developed to demo it at the conference. But Auctiva could revisit the app in the future, Kinell says.
“We really liked this idea,” adds Mark Montgomery, content writer for Auctiva Marketplace Platform. “We thought this was a really fascinating idea and that if offered a lot of potential.”
Productivity tools, such as the Seller Dashboard, are among the most popular apps for the iPad—a relatively new platform that is quickly building momentum. Experts predict that more than 1.3 million devices will sell by June. And in just three weeks since its debut, several sites are reporting that iPads account for more than 25 percent of their online traffic.
